The Sander Flaum Leadership Speaker Series is the capstone of our Leadership & Professional Development (LPD) program in which high profile executives speak about their journey to leadership, their leadership style, lessons learned, and provide advice to the students as they develop their own leadership style.

Speaker: Dr. Jose "Zito" Sartarelli, past Company Group Chairman, Johnson & Johnson – Pharmaceuticals Group

Audience: 1st year full-time MBA students (Required to attend 1 of the 2 Sander Flaum Leadership Speakers) & Working Professional MBA students

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Sartarelli joined Johnson & Johnson on October 29, 2001 as Company Group Chairman, Pharmaceutical Group, for Asia Pacific, Japan, and Latin America. In this capacity he oversees the pharmaceutical business (Janssen-Cilag) of the company with particular emphasis on achieving competitive superiority.

Prior to joining Johnson & Johnson in 2001, he served as President, Latin America/Canada, Worldwide Medicines Group, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. In this role he was responsible for the company's prescription and consumer medicines operations in more than 20 countries. Dr. Sartarelli's primary areas of focus, in addition to P&L responsibility for the area, included leadership development, business competitiveness and shaping the external environment.

In 1999, Dr. Sartarelli served as President, Asia Pacific/Middle East/Africa, Worldwide Medicines Group, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. In this capacity, he was responsible for all prescription and consumer medicines business in more than 40 countries, including Japan, Australia/New Zealand and South Africa. In 1997, he held the position of Senior Vice President of Franchise Management, Business Analysis and Planning and Sales Force Effectiveness, Intercontinental, for the Worldwide Medicines Group, overseeing initiatives in sales force effectiveness, global branding, market analysis and portfolio development and life cycle management for prescription medicines.

Prior to joining Bristol-Myers Squibb in 1997, Dr. Sartarelli held various senior positions with international responsibilities in marketing and management at Eli Lilly and Company in the United States, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific.

Dr. Sartarelli received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (Getulio Vargas Foundation) in 1973. He earned his MBA degree in Marketing in 1975 under a Fulbright Scholarship, and his Ph.D. degree in Business Administration in 1979, both from Michigan State University.

Since March, he has been Chairman of the Japan Steering Committee of PhRMA, having held the chairmanship of the Latin American Steering Committee of PhRMA in 2002/2003. During 2001 he was Chairman of the Canada Steering Committee and Vice Chairman of the Latin America Steering Committee. He also served as the Chairman of the International Section, Asia Pacific Steering Committee from 1998 through 2000. He has held positions of leadership at a number of global pharmaceutical industry associations, including President of Interfarma Association of Multinational Laboratories of Brazil (U.S./Europe laboratories). Dr. Sartarelli has authored sales and marketing articles and has spoken extensively on business and economic topics in the United States, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.
